Psycho-Pass Extended Edition aired as a recap of Psycho-Pass and background for the 2014 release of Psycho-Pass 2. The series cuts the original 22 episodes down to eleven 45-minute episodes with new footage added alluding to events included in the official novel. The quality of the scenes is also upgraded, with repairs made to several bugs, and enhanced special effects, especially of the Dominator.

Concept[]

Extended Edition merges the 22 episodes of the first season into 11 pairs of two consecutive ones. This merger enables the production staff to remove one opening and one ending per new, long episode.
Such a process frees about 3 minutes per episode to add new scenes. Most episodes features two new scenes. One at the very beginning and another in the middle, linking two consecutive season 1 episodes.
However, there are a few exceptions:

  • episode 5 features its beginning new scene after the opening;
  • episode 9 starts its first new scene on the tenth minute;
  • episode 10 and 11 have only one new scene each, but of the length of two regular ones:
    • episode 10 features it in the middle;
    • episode 11 features its own at the very beginning.

As Extended Edition is mainly a recap, many additional scenes are cost-effective, relying on voice-overs and dialogues. Being there to ease the transitions between the episodes and provide context.

Trivia[]

  • In real-life, on July 26, 2014, before the fourth episode was to be televised, a 16 year-old girl murdered her 15 year-old classmate in her apartment in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture by dismembering and decapitating her. The episode's broadcasts scheduled on July 31 were cancelled soon after, due to very similar violent content in said episode (which covered Rikako Oryo's crimes).
    • In its place, on July 31, the fifth episode was broadcasted. And the following week, to retrieve a regular broadcasting pace, the fifth and the sixth episodes were aired together. On the other hand, the fourth episode were to be released online only.[3]
